The most popular form of Iranian literature is Persian poetry. Some of the world’s most influential poets such as Khayyam, Rumi, Saadi, and Hafez were Iranians. Ferdowsi wrote the national epic of Iran in 50,000 lines of poetry more than 1,000 years ago.
The influence of Persian literature can be felt in that of Ottoman Turkey, Muslim India, and Turkic Central Asia and it is a source of inspiration for Goethe, Emerson, Matthew Arnold and Jorge Luis Borges.
